In the beginning…..they was Hertz loudspeakers (just kidding!!)
Not ALL subwoofers are created the same! Just because it is a 12 inch woofer does NOT mean it automatically goes in a 1.3 sealed box (or whatever size you feel like!!
Speakers have parameters, like a camsahft on a car does. On a camsaft it is called "duration and lift".
Hertz loudspeakers as well as ALL speakers have the same kind of deal, parmeters…but they are called "Theile-Small". To correctly utlilize a woofer (we call them sub-woofers) for car audio we need to know their specific parameters (Theile/Small).
REMEMBER- There is NO SUCH THING as "Optimum" enclosure size!!
A good rule of thumb is "when in doubt, go BIGGER!".
If there is a choice… go vented! You CAN NOT "give away" 6-8dB of low frequency output.
Or roughly 4 to 8 times more audio amplifier power is needed for a sealed enclosure, versus a vented (or ported) enclosure.!! Meaning your 500 watt amplifer will act like a 2,000 watt amplifer with a "properly" designed and implimented VENTED enclosure. A REALLY BIG deal actually.
Add to this the equivalent current demands from the extra power used for a sealed enclosure (basically for every 1000 watts RMS you'll need 100 amperes of current from your alternator!)
Adding or increasing the size of the existing batteries helps, but can cause alternators to die, because of the "load" presented.
Hertz Loudspeakers - Full Range Speaker "Tips"
There are many ways to get the most performance out of your Hertz speakers. Below are a couple articles we thought interesting and good enough to share with you.
- Basic rule of thumb is to get as large a "mid bass/midrange " driver as possible. Run it as low as possible (somewhere in the 40-70Hz range) This will move the image forward and give you better midbass attack.
- Get your tweeters up high on the "A" pillars or dash -if possible, anything else is a compromise. Damp doors with sound deadening material (DynaMat, Second Skin, Hush Mat, etc).
- Make sure there are no leaks around the exit of the driver into the interior of the vehicle. In other words make sure there is a good seal with NO leaks in front of the driver between it and the door panel.
- Make sure that the midbass does NOT hit the door panel under full excursion!
Hertz Loudspeakers - Woofer Enclosures "Tips"
Hertz woofer specifications are on the www.hertaudiovideo.com website All the "Theile//Small" information. This is super important information when you are trying to build your own subwoofer enclosure OR buying an enclosure to fit your brand new shiny Hertz woofer. Below are some "Quick Guides" you can download (they are PDF's) This is the quick way to get an enclosure built and going.
